What You Need To Know About Marie Kondo

How a petite Japanese sparked a decluttering revolution

A cleaning craze has been going on around the world since the start of the year, or at least, in parts of the world where Internet television streaming service Netflix is available. And it's all thanks to organising guru Marie Kondo and her show, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.

However, Kondo has actually been working her magic way before the Netflix show. Some may have heard of her book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up (2011), most probably mentioned by some life-coach or other, and most probably in the same articles or blog posts also mentioning Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit.

Yes, folks. Kondo's book is practically a classic, and she's actually been around forever. Thanks to Netflix, though, a new audience is now getting to know this Queen of Clean and her brand of spacial enlightenment. And if you'd like to know more about this relatively-private celebrity, read on.

2. Her fame started with her books

The book titled The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up was first published in 2011. It was published in the United States in 2014 and has been a best-seller in both Japan and Europe. It has also been categorized as ‘#1 New York Times bestselling book’. Now, it has sold millions of copies in over 30 countries.

The book is about organising and how by organising and minimising the material things at home and at the office, your life would be less stressful. While organising, one has to connect with each items and decide if that item ‘sparks joy’ – asking yourself if it makes you happy. If the item sparks joy, then keep the item but if it doesn’t then you’ll have to let it go.

If you’re more of a picture person, the Manga version with a storyline is available as well. Also good if your teenaged children are more like this “picture person” (Hint! Hint!).
