With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we are reminded of the greatest love stories of all time. Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, Romeo and Juliet, Pocahontas and John Smith – they all had one thing in common – yes: passion, love, lust but most notably tragic endings.
Maybe that’s why they continue to remain as the most memorable ones.
Here are a few more saddest love stories from history and legends to tug at that hopeless romantic heartstring of yours.
6. Salim and Anarkali
Salim, the son of the great Mughal emperor Akhbar, fell in love with an ordinary but beautiful courtesan Anarkali. The relationship was not well wished by the emperor. Apparently, he could not accept the fact that his son was dating an ordinary courtesan.
The emperor used several tactics to pressure Anarkali to leave the prince. When Salim came to know of this, he declared a war against his own father. However, Salim was no match for his father as the emperor had a bigger army than his. He was defeated and sentenced to death.
In order to save the prince, Anarkali renounced her love to save her beloved prince from the jaws of death. She was then entombed alive in a brick wall right in front of her lover’s eyes.
