Hairstyle to Try This New Year: The Lob

The lob, short for long bob, has continuously been the go-to cut for women these past few years – even dubbed the hairstyle of the year by beauty experts and insiders. Think that recognition is too far-fetched? Not really, as the style manages to flatter a variety of different face shapes, complexions and hair textures. Simply put, it is a classic cut that works on everyone! Everyone in Tinseltown have been spotted sporting the lob, from Rachel McAdams and Rosamund Pike to Dakota Johnson and Priyanka Chopra.

LOB 101

Kevin Woo, founder and creative director of the award-winning CENTRO W Salon, gives us the exclusive scoop together with three local personalities showcasing this universal style. The mane maestro, who bagged Best Director’s Cut award in The Malaysian Women’s Weekly Spa Awards 2016, takes on our burning questions about the lob.

How does the lob suit every individual?

KW: Because of its length, it does not weigh the head or drag the face down, both of which creates a tired appearance. If you have fine hair, the lob will create more volume and body. For those with frizzy or curly hair, the lob helps give a tidier look.

Can you share quick style tips for: a) an important work presentation; b) weekend brunch with girlfriends; and c) date night with hubby?

KW: a) Show up with a head of polished yet chic waves. Start by applying a heat-protecting formula onto hair before curling hair inwards; b) The key here is to create volume and texture so apply a few spritzes of texturising spray followed by a styling powder before giving hair a good scrunch; c) Keep it simple yet memorable by doing a side parting, then tuck in hair on one side.

Any advice to someone who wants to go ahead with the cut?

KW: I’d say, go for it! If you are still unsure or not 100 per cent convinced about getting the lob cut, you can ask for long layers first as it will help distribute the weight of hair so that it’s not too heavy at the crown.
