Check out the Korean-inspired desserts that are sweeping across our F&B industry.

The next K-wave is here and we’re not even talking about K-pop music. Check out the Korean-inspired desserts that are sweeping across our F&B industry.

DAL KOMM COFFEE

Malaysians fell head over heels with Patbingsu’s when it was introduced and now this shaved ice dessert with sweet toppings has quickly become one of the must-eat items on any person’s dessert list. And with the introduction of Dal.Komm Coffee café, needless to say, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to desserts. The café serves more than five different Patbingsu flavours and our favourites were the Chocolate Lava, Lemon Dazzling and Apple Crumble Bingsu.

However, if you’re not into shaved ice desserts or you love your ais kacang too much to convert to something more foreign, may we suggest a plate of thick warm buttery toast topped with ice cream instead? We recommend the Nutella Banana Honey Toast. Aside from food, Dal.Komm has a splendid drinks menu which serves a variety of unique flavoured drinks. We recommend the signature iced honey grapefruit which is a staple back in Korea or the Sweet Potato Latte, a purple drink which has a rich and creamy texture.

MILKCOW

If you’ve gone to Midvalley in the past few months, you would have noticed these long queues forming at a store in front of Cold Storage. Ring any bells? Aaahhh, we thought so too. First on our radar was Milkcow Malaysia which is famous for its honeycomb soft serve ice cream, a flavour that was made famous in South Korea. Our verdict – The soft-serve ice cream was creamy, smooth and had just the right amount of sweetness. Combined with the edible and chewy honeycomb, it was the kind of dessert that you could still have after a heavy meal. However, some might feel that the honeycomb is too chewy for their liking. If that’s the case, we recommend the Milky Honey that comes with a drizzle of liquid honey instead. For chocolate lovers, be sure to check out the Cookies & Cream and the Black Pearl which is soft serve ice cream topped with chocolate sauce, organic salt and cocoballs .

JIPANGI

This unique and quirky dessert has come along way from the streets of Insa-dong, South Korea and is surely one of the more unusual ones that we’ve seen here so far. However, new as it may be, this dessert is already making its way into our hearts and tummies. Despite serving only ice cream, Jipangi, is making waves for its unique take on it. The cone which comes in the shape of the letter ‘J’ is created with roasted corn ingredients that is imported all the way from Korea. According to the owners, this is to ensure the authenticity and the unique texture and flavour of the dessert remains.

Right now, the ice cream comes in two flavours – vanilla and chocolate. The J-shaped cone makes consuming the ice-cream a lot easier. Don’t be fooled by its size, it can actually be very filling and if you’re not feeling too hungry, we recommend sharing the ice cream with a friend. You get to order two flavours but don’t expect a vanilla and chocolate twist like the one’s in McDonalds. The flavours will be separated so you get two distinct taste on each end. And to our surprise, the corn-flavoured cone was crunchy and tasty and ten times better than your average ice cream cones.

OW: L ESPRESSO

However, if you’re tired of Korean dessert chains and would like to try something a little more different, may we recommend OW:L Espresso café? Created by a Korean who resides in Malaysia, this café serves Patbingsu’s and toasts with sweet toppings which are popular Korean desserts back home. At OW:L Espresso, the owners use milk-flavoured shaved ice to create its patbingsu’s. The combination of milk and red bean is brilliant and makes the dessert a whole lot more refreshing and addictive. We had the pleasure of trying out the signature Injeolmi Bingsu, Milk Pat Bingsu and Caffe Affogato Bingsu Among all the places we’ve seen, OW:L Espresso serves one of the best shaved ice dessert. What makes it unique is the milk-flavoured shaved ice that it uses to create it’s patbingsu’s.
