“Obesity is a complex, multifaceted disease. I believe education, providing the necessary resources and raining awareness on Malaysians about food, nutrition and exercise to influence lifestytle change, is key in combatting this issue,” says Adele.

The outcome has been promising with a decrease in the sale of soda according to data in countries like Mexico that has implemented the soda tax, Adele says. Whether or not that translates to any improvement in the population health isn’t clear. “Your overall health does not depend just on sugar so it will be difficult to relate such policy measures to improvement of health,” she adds.

However, there are many strategies that can be implemented to combat obesity and diabetes, and imposing a sugar tax is just one of it to target large populations, Adele believes. “These strategies need to be accompanied by aggressive public health campaigns for it to be effective,” she says.
